Getting to know wolfdogs:

Getting to know wolfdogs:

Many people have called them wolf hybrids for years, but today we prefer to use the term wolfdogs.
Dog derived from the wolf, with both species being classified as canines and use the canis name.
The wolf is known as (Canis Lupus) and the dog as a (Canis Lupus Familiaris).
The term canis means (dog).

So what is a wolfdog and who did we get them:

A wolfdog is a canine produced by the mating of a wolf to a domestic dog just as the name implies, but there is a few ways to get the wolfdog breeds.
1) Wolf to a dog
2) Wolfdog to wolfdog
3) Wolfdog to a dog

The f-gen:

Many owners and breeders will get into the discussion of my wolfdog is an f1 80% wolfdog or whatever there wolfdog may be that they are talking about, but what does that all mean?
When they say it is an F1, F2 and so forth the F refers to filial generation or the f-gen.
Another way to look at it is:
 F1= mom or dad was a pure wolf to the wolfdog
 F2=one of the grandparents was a pure wolf
F3= a great-grandparent was a pure wolf
F4= great-great-grandparent was a pure wolf
and so on and so on.

So what does the number mean?

The number following after the F will tells you how many generations away from the wolf the wolfdog is.
An example of this would be
F=filial generation, 2=one of the grandparents was a pure wolf, 75%=is the percentage of wolf or how much wolf it has in it.
It is, however, possible to have an F1 50% wolfdog as well as an F1 85% wolfdog depending on the pair that was breed.
