Wolfdog DNA:

Wolfdog DNA. testing:

Here at the sanctuary, we do wolfdog DNA testing on all of our wolfdogs.
We test all of ours for a few different reasons but we would rather not play the guessing game.
We use a company called Embark that is by far a very reliable company. With their testing being within 5% +/-.

Many breeders will argue that DNA is not very trustworthy but technology has come above and beyond what many of us could imagine.
Despite more and more lineages becoming corrupt as well as inaccurate, it is always a good idea to do a DNA test for a few reasons.

First of all, it can let you know if the breeder was wrong or if they have misrepresented the animal they were selling. (see our misrepresentation page)
Secondly, It can show you things such as COI. COI is the animals inbreeding (see below)
Thirdly, it can show if they are at risk of or a carrier of a disease. (also see below)

Furthermore, these are some of the things that could prove helpful to you and your vet later one.
There are many other benefits to having one tested, although DNA testing cannot find things such as hip dysplasia as well as joint problems those are different types of testing and require x-rays that well, need to be done by a vet.

Another key point is Embark can also compare DNA if you have two that have been tested they can check and see if they are siblings or who the parents are. Although if they are not your wolfdogs you will need the owner’s permission.

Below is just some of the many things that a wolfdog DNA testing can provide.

DNA

The above is a wolfdog DNA test using Embark.
As can be see it gives the percentage of each breed in the animal.

LINEAGE

The above shows what lineage papers would look like, only filled in with the animal and breeder’s names and percentages.

Lineage:

Lineage is just what it says it’s a family tree. It is a way to supposedly be able to trace the ancestors of your wolfdog.
Like AKC papers only WITHOUT a 3rd party overseeing it, more or less he said she said.
Just to point out most lineage today has become corrupt with many changing their percentages or stealing lineage to make their wolfdogs look better.

Some of the things Embark testing can show.

This information can be beneficial to you and your veterinarian.

DNA testing is not limited to just wolfdog DNA you can also test a domestic dog as well.
